Despite increasing interest in the work of Lady Morgan (Sydney Owenson) (1776-1859) and the rise of the national novel this is the first modern edition of the Wild Irish Girl to include the 'Introductory Letters' to the novel (which establishes the framework of the plot) and scholarly annotation. The novel intervenes in many of the literary and philosophical debates of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, forging a connection between the eighteenth-century discourse of sentiment and emergent nineteenth-century concept of the nation.
Reviews
‘This is a worthy addition to the Pickering & Chatto series, an important critical tool that will help expand our knowledge of women’s writing in the period and contribute to our understanding of the making of culture in the Romantic period.’
– Ina Ferris, The Wordsworth Circle
