The Pickering Masters

Our highly prestigious series The Pickering Masters is home to some of the most important scholarly publishing of recent years. The series collects the works and correspondence of major figures in the history of ideas and literature. Full scholarly apparatus accompanies the texts.

The Pickering Masters carry the following editorial features:

General Introduction

Each edition in The Pickering Masters series includes a general introduction by the General Editor or Editors of the edition. This draws together the themes of all the works included in the edition, presents the editorial rationale behind the publication and gives details of the editorial practices and features of the edition.

Chronology

Pickering Masters include a chronology of the significant events in the life of an author, including dates of publication and external events which had a bearing on their work.

Introductory Note

Each new work within an edition is preceded by an appropriate short introductory note or headnote, placing the text within context, and including details of its publication or the history of its inception, its significance and influence plus further details of the author relevant to the individual text.

Textual Editing

The texts for each Pickering Master are carefully chosen from amongst the most representative lifetime editions. In general, the earliest available text is usually chosen. The texts are studied closely and typographical errors or superseded conventions are silently corrected and explained in the appropriate editorial matter. Details of the edition used and its source are also given and the original pagination is indicated in the retypeset page for ease of cross-reference.

Textual Variants

Where there was more than one edition of a work within the author’s lifetime, a list of significant variants is provided. These appear at the back of each volume with an appropriate page indication and details of the edition in which they appeared. They are accompanied by a short introductory passage indicating the editions considered and possible reasons for the variants.

Bibliography

A list of all the significant publications cited or referred to in the edition is given where appropriate.

Consolidated Index

Each Pickering Master has a consolidated index for the entire edition in the final volume of the work. This includes indexing of all the editorial material and the text where appropriate.
