Conduct Literature for Women makes available a selection of rare works of conduct literature from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. The collection, published in facsimile with a general introduction and headnotes to each text, offers for the first time a survey of the development of a genre that played a crucial role in the changing notions of femininity.
Wherever possible, the texts are reproduced in full, from a representative copy in their frequently long publishing history. The series lays the textual groundwork for future research into the impact of conduct literature on the development of fictional literature, and enables scholars to assess the historical interrelations of gender ideologies with other types of discourses, whether political or religious, literary or scientific.
The publishing history of the texts, which often stretches over many decades, is noted to facilitate the study of their likely readership and impact.
‘a precious resource... Pickering & Chatto have made a potentially rugged sea of information perfectly navigable.’
– AmiJo Comeford, Ben Jonson Journal
