This series builds on the successes of Pickering & Chatto's existing series Lives of the Great Romantics and Lives of Victorian Literary Figures. It reproduces in facsimile carefully selected extracts from rare biographies, memoirs, articles, pamphlets, letters, private diaries and other ephemera. Contemporaries often took more partisan views than later historians, as they wrote with no knowledge of their subjects’ later careers. The use of these documents permits a new biographical approach.
